What I love about Becky is her CREATIVE ENERGY. You can ask any one of her close friends, and I'm sure they would tell you that Becky just overflows with creativity and energy. Becky started baking custom cookies about two years ago. About a year ago, Donny and I (Jessica) took note of Becky's cookies, and approached her about turning it into a viable, sustainable business. I think Becky was toying with the idea, but we wanted to know if she planned to keep it a hobby or pursue it as a business.
One final takeaway from this episode: take a look at how your new business endeavor is affecting those around you. At the end of the show, Dave (Jessica's husband) and Sean (Milli's husband) talk candidly about their support in helping their wives' budding businesses. It isn't easy, and open communication and honest feedback are key.
One of many things we all do in our journey through life is make mistakes. And we will certainly have many more opportunities as we start our small business. With Shawn's expertise, listen to this podcast and realize there are many mistakes you can avoid, way before you make them.
Shawn grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania. He has always been drawn to the entrepreneurial aspect of things, and seemed to gravitate toward leadership in whatever endeavor he was in. He attended Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh on a Business Management major and played football there as well. In his freshman year he was injured early in the season and his football days were essentially over. The following year he transferred to Penn State (Behrend Campus) in Erie, Pennsylvania to continue his business education.
Bill Cox of Bill Cox Coaching is a personal friend and today's Square One Show guest. For over 18 years, Bill has served as Executive Pastor of McLane Church in Edinboro, Pennsylvania.
But life's journey has lead him to pursue his passion of coaching and developing others to become G.R.E.A.T - Growing, Responsible, Engaged, Authentic, Teachable. Bill recently became a certified coach with the John Maxwell Team as well as an Authorized Strategic Business Partner with Profiles International, where he can save you time and money by assisting you in hiring and retaining top performers for your company.
Glenn has actually started two businesses recently, in two completely different directions. With his talent for music, he was able to come off the road after a brief stint on staff at a local church, and offer to teach music to many in his community. Obviously not a huge reach for him as he has the talent to do that. Coupled with his notoriety from the band, marketing himself as a viable teacher was a pretty simple task. You can find Glenn, the music teacher, at Williamsburg School of Music.
"My square one was probably one of the lowest points in my life, actually. I had gone through a really rough period in my marriage, and relationships, just with myself. I was in a depression and I don’t think I totally realized it... I was looking so much to THAT, to get my approval." - Lori Clapper
Most businesses fail in the first few years because they don't consider EVERYTHING.
What are your cost of goods? How much do you charge for your product? Do you have customers? Why would someone buy your product or service?
Square One Show Hosts Donny, Dave & Jessica talk about how you can start up your own business. They answer questions and host authentic conversations about what it's like to start up your own business.
Can you picture them? Can you describe them well? What do they like and not like? How do they act? What kinds of things are they into? Where do they live?
Some of you will have a wide customer base; your product or service can be for almost anyone and everyone. But for even more of you (especially these days), you'll find you have a much clearer defined niche. And believe me, that niche can be a moving target at times.
If you've never been involved in the process where you have to put a price on something, the process can handcuff some, whereas for others, they approach it with ambivalence.
If you've never done it before we'd love to help you. There are tools and techniques you can use and there is also a degree of research that must be taken into consideration if you want to get it as close to "the best price", as possible.
